Potatoes
Today, in place of a lake, there is a tract of
13,000 hectares, a third of which is used for the cultivation of potatoes,
with an annual production of 120,ooo tonnes.
It is called the “Piana del Fucino”(Fucino Plain), the
name derived from that of the lake which was permanently drained, after
centuries of attempts, in 1875, by Prince Allessandro Torlonia who managed
to do what no-one else, not even the Romans, had done.
For the people in the Aquila area, 700 meters above sea level, it
means that they can produce a kind of potato called the Fucense, renowned
for its characteristics created by the particular conditions of the
land and the mountain climate. In this area of "Piana del Fucino",
there are two associations of firms producing patatoes and using them
to make potato flakes, frozen semi-fried potatoes and "gnocchi".
