The increase in this sector in the region of Abruzzo is quite recent.
It was only in the first five years of 1970s that the most important national and international industries discovered the area’s potential. They then established several large factories, mostly concerned with the manufacture of commercial vehicles.

The establishment of many large factories in the province of L’Aquila initiated the industrialization of this region, laying a base for the beginning and growth of hundreds of small and middle firms. These firms initialy worked only for the larger ones but, in time, developed their own professional ability leading them to patent and to produce.

Today the local spread is well-established: apart from the large italian and foreign firms, there is also a widespread network of these aforementioned small and middle firms which have conquered either domestic or international markets.

It is imperative to mention the technological pole of L’Aquila where various industries produce goods with a high quality technological content. This fact has enabled the whole province to become a reference point at an international level in just a few years. In fact, different structures and laboratories are recognized as being among the best in the world, the physics laboratory of Gran Sasso and Telespazio, for example.
