Abruzzo has always been naturally predisposed to be
agriculturally successful.
It is possible to observe a wide variety of crops since
the territory of Abruzzo is made up of vast plains along the coast as
well as various meandering hills which eventually lead to the spectacular
appennine mountain range.
Crops are distributed throughout the zone in direct
relation to landscape, climate and altitude. The most prominent products
are, and always have been, olive oil and wine, for both quality and
quantity.
Today the cultivation of olive-trees and grapevines has changed in relation
to the past. In Abruzzo, as with the rest of the world, advances in
modern technology have led to machinery taking the place of more traditional
methods of cultivation. The quality of the products, however, remains
unchanged.
Besides producing wine and olive oil there are many
other products typically grown in Abruzzo such as vegetables, truffles
and saffron.
Up until a century ago our “Fucino” plain contained the
greatest lake in central Italy. This great lake was then drained by
Prince Torlonia and today we grow a wide variety of vegetables which
are largely exported to several different countries in northern Europe.
In recent years methods of cultivation have changed
profoundly allowing agriculture to continue to represent an important
part of Abruzzo’s economy as well as putting Abruzzo firmly on
the map as one of the leading regions in central Italy.
