The Vasto Area Industrial Consortium, was in fact the first
in the whole region (and one of the first in southern Italy) to be formed,
and has been responsible for Abruzzo’s economic and manufacturing
revival since the early 1960s.
It too involves three industrial areas – the largest one being
Vasto – Punta Penna and in the Sinello Valley.
In this example of industrialisation the leading role of a few large
firms has enabled local companies to emerge and become firmly established
in the area, and has also revitalised and modernised agriculture in
being an example of integration between farming and industry that in
many aspects is unique to Abruzzo, and in particular, to the province
of Chieti.
The area also benefits from a high standard of infrastructuring (port
of Vasto, large vehicle parking area of San Salvo, road networks, water
and gas supply systems, power plants, rail linkups, sewage and drinking
water treatment plants, etc.) which makes it one of the most highly
functional in the whole of southern Italy.
